I listened to this audio book for teens, (the cover drew me in) called “Speak”…it was compared to another teen book called “13 reasons why” which a librarian had recommended to me to read. I had told her that I like the creativity of a lot of the books I’ve read that were written for teens. Anyways, although “Speak” was a decent book on the dark subject of rape, I thought 13 reasons why was much better. That being said, perhaps this will be more relatable to some young people , and it is a subject that needs various authors and perspectives. My favorite thing about the entire book is the afterword. I will share it here:
I am not a severe. (Not entirely bed bound or stuck in my room), but I am in bed a lot of time during the day. I have to pace and watch my energy output. I am home most of the time. The grocery store and Drs. appts are my main outings these days. Yet, I am grateful that I am not trapped forever in my bed in one room as so many others are. I am posting this as today is Aug. 8th Severe ME/CFS awareness day. I also post in memory of my dear friend Mark who was badly afflicted with this disease and took his own life 2 years ago, and for all the others out there who have done the same. I feel hope is on the horizon, but it will not be soon enough for many.
